Artslant March Showcase Winner

Artslant Showcase Winner: Mixed Media Category, March 2009

Failed to mention this when it happened, but I was lucky enough to be chosen among about 6 people in my category over at the Artslant website, which has started running monthly competitions. I entered the work (Resolving Barclay’s Dilemma from the Reclaimed Houses Series) in the mixed media category, as it included so much drawing in colored pencil. Of course it’s a painting, but I figured what the heck. It made sense at the time, and was later named a Showcase finalist. I didn’t end up as the winner ultimately, but it was a really nice honor.

Dennis Edell, owner of DirectSalesWebmarketing.com is giving away $100 split 3 ways for the Best “Blog Improvement Review”. A normal blog review, with extra emphasis on what needs improving. The man WANTS to know what’s WRONG with his blog and made it a contest! Nuts, huh? Click the link to find out why after you read my review below ;) .

Dennis Edell Online Marketing

Dennis Edell Online Marketing

I read a lot of blogs every day — mostly they’re about online marketing in one form or another. Why do I do this? I think there are a lot of useful pieces of information out there that can help website owners, regardless of the brand or point of the site, in any number of ways. Increasing traffic, getting better rankings in the search engines, making the site look more polished and professional. Reading blogs on these subjects seems to be the best way to do this, maybe because the industry is small, accessible and because information is constantly in flux in the space.

That being said, I read Dennis Edell’s blog nearly every day — it’s called Direct Sales Web Marketing, and though I don’t do any direct sales online, I do think about my personal brand, Matty Byloos as writer and painter, as a type of online sale — after all, I’m “selling” information on me, “selling” my own site as the single best place for an audience to find information on me. Poet Brendan Constantine Live Video

I had the absolute pleasure of sharing the stage for a minute Sunday night at Beyond Baroque with LA writers Brendan Constantine, and my publisher from Write Bloody, Derrick Brown. Both these guys seriously blew things up with their language and delivery — it was a top-notch show and I strongly recommend you follow both, and see them when you can.

Aero Theater Marquis Santa Monica

Aero Theater Marquis Santa Monica

According to the Aero Theater’s website, “As writer, director, actor and producer, Carl Reiner stands alongside Mel Brooks and Woody Allen as one of the titans of late 20th century American comedy.” Regardless of where you place Reiner in your all time comedy list, he’s super funny and has Steve Martin to carry the film if you don’t agree.
