Tackling Centaurs in First Post at The Nervous Breakdown

Late breaking news: yesterday, my first post went up over at The Nervous Breakdown. It’s all about crossing boundaries.

Byloos: The Nervous Breakdown Debut

Byloos: The Nervous Breakdown Debut

You’ll find the whole thing here: Where Centaurs Find Themselves in the Whole Love Deal. Obviously, it’s been categorized in the Health & Lifestyle section of the site, exactly where it most appropriately belongs. Some things covered? Mad Men. Clean Laundry. Domestic Assistance. Multiple Limbs. Fences in Meadows. Multiple genitals. Do I really need to sell this piece any harder? Ok. One more: Roger Daltrey. There. Now go and read.

Pilot Books Seattle Reading Photos

JULY 17, 2010 Photos From Saturday Reading With Special Guests, at PILOT Books, Seattle
Thanks to the small but attentive gathering at the very lovely bookstore in Seattle, Pilot, and to Summer for making this happen. Matthew was awesome, Carrie was awesome, it was a great night for sure. Excepting the fact that we got pulled over twice for expired tags, that is. Here are a few pictures, some by M. Simmons (the 2 interesting ones), some by me (the crappy ones).

PLOP! Performance Series: Seattle Reading Information

Matty Byloos Reading at PLOP!, Seattle, WA
This one just got added to the calendar for the fall of 2010 — another great reading booked for Seattle, Washington. This time, host Josie Davis was awesome enough to accept my submission to the series, and we planned out a time slot for October of this year. Whoopie!

Plop Reading and Performance Series, Seattle

According to Josie and the history section of the Plop site, “PLOP! is an all new performance series produced and curated by Seattle artist Josie Davis. Performances happen 3rd Saturdays of each month, so be sure to mark your calendar! PLOP! Invites select literary and music artists from across the Northwest to perform their work in an intimate house setting for a unique, wide eyed audience. Want to PLOP!? Bring your pillow to Beacon Hill.”

I am totally looking forward to this. If everything works out alright, I can get Josh Atlas to make a trip up to the Pacific Northwest and maybe by that time, we’ll have a brand new video ready to go along with the reading.

That being said, if anyone up there has a gigantic television screen that we can use, or a video projector that we can hook a Mac up to, along with a projection screen, let me know so we can try to work out some details here. Probably won’t work out, but just in case… I thought I ought to throw that out to the ether.

Pilot Books Seattle Reading Information

Matty Byloos Reading at PILOT Books, Seattle, WA
Maybe it’s overrated and maybe it’s just because this is all still pretty new to me, but the idea of leaving the state to go and read to strangers is awesome. So… a new reading, at what appears to be a wonderful idea of a book store, indie books only, in Seattle. Couple of very special writers also reading with me on a Saturday evening in July.

Recently, a new down-loadable magazine called Pop Serial was born. In print form, it is a limited-edition art/literature print magazine edited by Stephen Tully Dierks. You can Email the editor here: stephen.dierks@gmail.com. More importantly, if you visit the Pop Serial website here, you can access a free download of the magazine, featuring my story, “Loved in Spite of Great Fault.”

The magazine is jam packed with buttery, crispy-bottomed goodness, including text and or visual material from the likes of: Tao Lin, Carlos Kotkin, Sarah Meadows, Brandon Scott Gorrell, Holly Kass, Zachary German and a host of other really interesting folk from all over the country.

Here is a little bit of the intro to the piece that I wrote, Loved in Spite of Great Fault,” which is a story about a recovering addict whose life has fallen apart. He struggles for control and for understanding in a universe that has proven itself to be, over and over again, replete with chaos and fraught with confusion. And then, he adopts a kitty cat.
